Kalighat Painting Of Varaha Avatar of Vishnu

This water colored painting of Varaha avatar of Lord Vishnu. Varaha is mentioned for the first time in the Rig-Veda, though not as Vishnu's incarnation and also in vague terms. It is only in later Vedic literature that the tale starts to take shape. As Prajapati's incarnation, Varaha is mentioned in the Taittiriya Samhita. When Prajapati was roaming the skies as wind one day prior to the earth emerging, he discovered the world was immersed in water. Then Prajapati changed into Varaha, descended into the waters, and raised the ground above them. This painting is from our kali ghat collection from Bengal. Available in size 28"x28" in excellent condition.
