Kalighat Painting Of Goddess Ganga seated on her Vahana-Makara

In this Kalighat painting, Goddess Ganga is seated in the padmasana position in the makara. According to its etymology, the word Ganga refers to something that appears from the sky (gam). She is a holy river that descends from heaven to the earth. Ganga water has always been regarded as a liquid medication (Gangani pathyam or Himavat prabhava pathyah punya). Ganga was a sister of the goddess Parvati since she was the offspring of Himvat, king of the mountains, and his wife Mena. Every account claims that she was brought up in the sky under Brahma's guidance. The painting is in excellent condition and size is 28"x20" and it comes without a frame.
